Kootenay Acres Farm Sanctuary Kootenay Acres Farm Sanctuary is a volunteer-run refuge dedicated to rescuing farmed animals and providing them with lifelong, compassionate care. With a focus on animals with disabilities and complex medical needs, the sanctuary is home to over 70 residents, including blind and vision-impaired sheep, a ewe with spina bifida, sheep with leg deformities, and senior chickens saved from slaughter. Through hands-on care, education, and outreach, they foster deeper connections between people and farmed animals, encouraging compassion and more conscious, ethical choices. Funded by donations, Lily’s Place focuses on giving animals safe, enriched lives while ensuring they are treated with dignity and compassion. However, the planned phase-out of provincial veterinary services in New Brunswick threatens access to essential large animal care, raising concerns about the sanctuary’s ability to continue supporting vulnerable animals. They coordinate the intake of surrendered pets, often working alongside local shelters, while relying on a network of foster homes, to whom they provide supplies to ensure animals are cared for in safe, temporary environments.
